Light Brown Sugar:
- 1 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon molasses
Dark Brown Sugar:
- 1 cup white granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons molasses
Mixing Light Brown Sugar:
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of white granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of molasses.
Using a fork, or whisk combine the sugar and molasses until the color is uniform and no streaks of molasses remain.
Mixing Dark Brown Sugar:
In another medium-sized mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of white granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons of molasses.
Use the same method to mix until fully incorporated, ensuring no streaks of molasses remain visible.
Storage:
Once your brown sugars are well mixed, store them in an airtight container. Keep in a cool, dry place to prevent the sugar from hardening.
If it does harden over time, add a slice of bread or a few marshmallows to the container to soften it up.
-
Ensure that the white sugar is finely granulated and the molasses is fresh for the best results.
-
You can adjust the sweetness and color of your brown sugar by adding more or less molasses according to your preference.
-
Mixing by hand can take a bit of elbow grease. If mixing becomes difficult, you can use a food processor to blend the sugar and molasses together more easily.
-
If molasses is not available, you can substitute it with dark corn syrup or maple syrup, although this will slightly alter the flavor.
-
Homemade brown sugar can be used immediately after mixing or stored for future use.
