    Baking: How Many Tablespoons in a Cup?

    Published: Dec 19, 2022 by Elle

    Do you ever feel confused when a baking recipe calls for a particular volume of ingredients, but only provides cup measurements? Don't worry, you are not alone! Cup measurements can be tricky because they don’t always provide an exact number of tablespoons. However, with a bit of knowledge and some simple math, you will soon be able to accurately measure the ingredients for your recipes. Let's take a look at how many tablespoons are in one-fourth, one-third, one-half, two-thirds, and three-fourths of a cup.

    How Many Tablespoons in a Cup

    A tablespoon is a unit of measurement that is used as both an ingredient measure and for serving food. A tablespoon is equal to 3 teaspoons or ½ fluid ounce. In contrast, a cup is a unit of volume equal to 8 fluid ounces or half a pint. The size of the cup depends on where the recipe originated from; recipes from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa use 250ml measuring cups while recipes from the United States use 8-ounce measuring cups.

    Converting Between Units of Cooking Measurements

    Now that we know what each unit is equal to, let's look at how to convert between them. To convert tablespoons into cups, simply divide the number of tablespoons by 16 (there are 16 tablespoons in 1 cup). For example, if you have 4 tablespoons, divide 4 by 16 and you get 0.25 cups. On the flip side, if you need to convert cups into tablespoons simply multiply the number of cups by 16 (1 cup = 16 tablespoons). So if you have ½ cup then multiply it by 16 and you will get 8 tablespoons.

    Basic Formula to Convert tablespoon to Cup

    • To get the number of tablespoons in a cup, multiply the number of cups by 16. For example, if you have 1 standard cup then you have 16 tablespoon (1 x 16 = 16);
    • To get the number of cups in a tablespoon, divide the number of tablespoons by 16;
    • For example, if you have 1 tbsp, it equals 0.0625 cups (1/16 = 0.0625). Similarly, if you have 4 tbsps then it is equal to 0.25 cups (4/16 = 0.25);

    Simple formula

    • 1 tablespoon = 0.0625 cups or 1/16 cup;
    • 1 cup = 16 tbsp;
    • 1 tablespoon = 3 tsp.

    How Many Tablespoons in ¼ Cup

    When converting ¼ cup into tablespoons, you will have 4 tablespoons in total. ¼ cup is equal to 2 fluid ounces, which means that there are 4 tablespoons per ¼ cup or 0.25 cup.

    • To convert tablespoons (tbsp) to cups, we use the following formula:
    • Conversion Formula: 1 tablespoon = 0.0625 cups (1/16th) or 1 cup = 16 tbsps;
    • Therefore to convert ¼ we need to divide 0.25 cup by 0.0625 cup; (0.25 / 0.0625 = 4 tbsps) OR;
    • You can also multiply 0.25 cup by 16 tbsp; (0.25 * 16 = 4 tbsps);
    • To give these numbers some context, let's use them as an example. Say you want to bake banana bread and the recipe calls for ¼ cup of butter. Using the conversion above, we know that ¼ cup equals 4 tbsps of butter. That would mean adding four tablespoons of butter to the mixture when baking your banana bread!

    How Many Tablespoons in ⅓ Cup

    ⅓ cup is equal to 2.67 fluid ounces, which means that there are 5.33 tablespoons every ⅓ cup or 0.33 cup.

    • We will use the same basic formula to convert ⅓ cup into tbsps;
    • Therefore to convert ⅓ we need to divide 0.33 cups by 0.0625 cups; (0.33 / 0.0625 = 5.33 tbsps) OR;
    • You can multiply 0.33 cups by 16 tbsp; (0.33 * 16 = 5.33 tbsps);
    • ⅓ cup = 5 tablespoon + 1 tsp.

    How Many Tablespoons in ½ Cup

    When converting ½ cup to tablespoons, you will get a total of 8 tablespoons. ½ cup is equivalent to 4 fluid ounces, therefore there are 8 tbsps in ½ cup or 0.5 cups.

    • Therefore to convert ½ we need to divide 0.5 cups by 0.0625 cups; (0.5 / 0.0625 = 8 tablespoons) OR;
    • You can multiply 0.5 cups by 16 tbsp; (0.5 * 16 = 8 tbsps);
    • To give these numbers some context, let's use them as an example. Say you want to make a marinade and the recipe calls for ½ cup of olive oil. Using the conversion above, we know that ½ cup equals 8 tbsps of olive oil. That would mean adding eight tablespoons of olive oil to your marinade when making it!

    How Many Tablespoons in ⅔ Cup

    When converting ⅔ cup into tablespoons, you will have 10.66 tablespoons in total. Since ⅔ cup equals 5.33 fluid ounces, there are 10.66 tablespoons every ⅔ cup or 0.67 cups.

    • We will use the same basic formula to convert ⅔ cup into tablespoons;
    • Therefore to convert ⅔ we need to divide 0.67 cups by 0.0625 cups; (0.67 / 0.0625 = 10.66 tbsps) OR;
    • You can multiply 0.67 cups by 16 tbsp; (0.67 * 16 = 10.66 tbsps);
    • ⅔ cup = 10 tbsps + 2 tsps.

    How Many Tablespoons in ¾ Cup

    When converting ¾ cups into tablespoons, you will end up with 12 tablespoons in total. ¾ cup is 6 fluid ounces, thus there are 12 tbsps every ¾ cup or 0.75 cups.

    • Therefore to convert ¾ we need to divide 0.75 cups by 0.0625 cups; (0.75 / 0.0625 = 12 tbsps) OR;
    • You can also multiply 0.75 cups by 16 tbsp; (0.75 * 16 = 12 tbsps);
    • To give these numbers some context, let's use them as an example. Say you want to make a sauce base and the recipe calls for ¾ cup of balsamic vinegar. Using the conversion above, we know that ¾ cup equals 12 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar. That would mean adding twelve tablespoons of balsamic vinegar to your sauce base when making it!

    How Many Tablespoons in an Ounce

    An ounce is a unit of measurement used primarily in baking and cooking to measure weight or volume. An ounce is equal to approximately 28 grams or ⅛ of a measuring cup. One tablespoon is also equal to about 14 grams or ½ of an ounce. That means that there are two tablespoons in one ounce.

    The most accurate way to measure ingredients for baking recipes is with a kitchen scale, as it measures both liquid and dry ingredients by weight rather than volume. This ensures that each ingredient is measured accurately, so your recipes turn out just right every time! However, if you don't have a kitchen scale handy and need to measure ingredients by volume instead, knowing how many tablespoons are in an ounce can be helpful.
