This versatile ingredient can be prepared in so many ways and added to so many dishes, however, it is important to get it right, especially with guests waiting! So, how long to boil carrots until they are soft and flavorful? Here you'll find tips for perfectly cooked boiled carrots, recipes, and nutritional facts as well as my favorite galzed carrots recipe.

    What are Carrots?

    Carrots are one of the most versatile vegetables out there, and with good reason! They can be cooked in a variety of ways—from roasted to steamed to pureed—and they can add flavor and texture to a variety of dishes, whether you start with frozen carrots or fresh carrots. They’re also crunchy, sweet, and packed with vitamins and minerals.

    Carrots for Cooking 

    When it comes to cooking with carrots, you have two main options: baby carrots or regular ones.

    • Baby carrots are just young, immature carrots that haven’t been allowed to fully develop yet. They’re usually more tender than fully grown ones, but they also tend to lack some of the sweetness that mature ones have.
    • Regular carrots are about an inch thick at their widest point (or even thicker!), and they come in all kinds of colors—from yellow to red to purple! Either type works great in salads, stir-fries, soups, stews, side dishes, or as a snack by themselves.

    Types of Cooking Methods for Carrots

    There are many different cooking methods for carrots, each with its unique flavor and texture.

    1. Steaming

    Steaming is a great way to quickly cook carrots without sacrificing flavor. Cut whole carrots into small slices or cubes, place in a pot of boiling water, and cook over low heat for 5 minutes. Add dried or fresh herbs or spices for extra flavor.

    2. Boiling

    Cut into thin strips or roundels and boil sliced carrots in water for 3-5 minutes until desired texture is reached. Add butter and herbs or spices for additional flavor. Frozen carrots will need to be boiled a little longer, however, ensure not to overcook the boiled vegetables as they quickly loose texture and bite.

    3. Braising

    Sauté sliced carrots in olive oil on medium heat until lightly browned (about 4-5 minutes). Simmer with liquid until tender (about 10 minutes), then add parsley, thyme, or other fresh herbs before serving.

    4. Roasting

    Preheat oven to 375F (190C), toss sliced or cubed carrots with oil/butter, salt & pepper, spread evenly on a lined baking sheet, and roast for 20-30 minutes until lightly browned and fork-tender.

    5. Microwaving

    Peel carrots and cut into small pieces, place in a microwave-safe bowl with ¼ cup water per lb of vegetables, and cook on high power for 3-4 minutes until crisp tender. Season before serving.

    The right boiled carrots recipe is an easy way to give this root vegetable a tasty and tender texture that is perfect for adding to soups, stews, pies, and other dishes. Boiling them is also incredibly fast, taking only 5-20 minutes depending on the size of the pieces.

    When boiling them for use in a soup, the cooking time will depend on the size of the pieces. If you cut your carrots into large chunks, they should take about 10-15 minutes to cook.

    If you slice them into thin coins, they will only need about 5-7 minutes. Correctly cooked carrots should be soft when poked with a fork but still firm enough to hold their shape.

    If you want to boil carrots until they are completely soft, this will take 10-20 minutes depending on the size of the pieces.

    Again, larger chunks will take longer than thin coins or slices. When cooked until very soft, boiled carrots can be mashed like potatoes or puréed into a soup or sauce. 

    How Long To Boil Carrots and Potatoes

    If you’re boiling both carrots and potatoes together (or any combination of vegetables), it’s important to note that all vegetables have different cooking times so it may be necessary to add them at different stages or cut them in different sizes.

    For example, if you are boiling large chunks of both potatoes and carrots together, add the potatoes first as they usually take longer than carrots to cook through.

    Then after about 8-10 minutes (or once the potatoes are almost done), add the carrots so that everything finishes cooking at roughly the same time.

    Tips for Perfectly Cooked Boiled Carrots

    Boiling carrots is simple, quick, and easy. With a few simple tips, I guarantee you can achieve delicious boiled carrots every single time, that even picky eaters will enjoy! Here are my top three tips for boiling them to perfection.

    1. Choose the Right Carrots

    When boiling carrots it’s important to choose the right ones! Always try to pick the freshest-looking carrots of similar size.

    This will help ensure they all cook at the same rate so that none of them end up undercooked (or overcooked).

    If there are any very large or small carrots in your bunch, cut the bigger ones into smaller pieces so they cook evenly with the rest of the batch.

    2. Don’t Overcook

    It’s important to watch when boiling carrots and not let them overcook.

    The best way to check for doneness is by sticking a fork into one of them - it should be tender enough that you can easily pierce it without too much resistance.

    Once your fork easily pierces through the carrot, turn off the heat and drain away any remaining water from the pan immediately!

    3. Add Flavor

    For even more flavor, add some butter or olive oil and fresh herbs or spices to your boiled carrots before serving.

    You could also try adding some freshly squeezed lemon juice for a bright citrus kick or even sprinkle over some grated Parmesan cheese for a cheesy twist on classic boiled carrots.

    Ingredients
      

    • 2 pounds carrots peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
    • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • ¼ cup brown sugar
    • 2 tablespoons honey
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
    • ¼ cup water

    Instructions
     

    • Preheat your oven to 375°F.
    • In a large saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons of butter over medium heat.
    • Add ¼ cup of brown sugar and 2 tablespoons of honey to the melted butter. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture begins to bubble.
    • Add ½ teaspoon of salt and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper to the butter mixture. Stir until combined.
    • Add 2 pounds of peeled carrots to the sweet glaze and mix until well coated.
    • Add ¼ cup of water to the saucepan. Cover the pan with a lid and let simmer for 8-10 minutes, occasionally stirring the carrots.
    • Remove the lid from the pan and let the carrots simmer for another 5-7 minutes, when the glaze has thickened and the carrots are fully cooked.
    • Transfer the glazed carrots to a baking dish and bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, or until the glaze has caramelized and the carrots are tender.
    • Remove the carrots from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

    Notes

    • When selecting carrots, look for ones that are firm and brightly colored. Avoid carrots that are soft or wilted.
    • Make sure to stir the carrots occasionally while simmering to ensure that they cook evenly and are fully coated in the glaze.
    • If you prefer a stronger flavor, you can add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the butter mixture.
    • To save time, you can peel and chop the carrots ahead of time and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you're ready to use them.
    • Maple syrup can be used as a substitute for honey.
